Welcome to
THE MARINE
Our Story
The Marine Hotel first opened its doors in August 1868 and was described as "a handsome new hotel".
In the early days, the hotel was patronised by sailors looking to unwind after weeks at sea.
The Marine quickly became a den of iniquity. 'Ladies of the Night' would occupy many of the rooms whilst gambling, trading of smuggled goods and other underhand activities went on in the function rooms. Fights would frequently break out in the bar and a fearsome reputation was forged.
Then in 2013, 145 years after it first opened, having seen better days and with it's reputation all but forgotten, The Marine was sold.
After a good spruce up and some TLC, the pub leapt back to life under its new owners, Alex and Steph.
The sale of contraband is no longer permitted, and bare knuckle fighting is strictly prohibited, but we're sure you'll still have an amazing time at The Marine!
With a fine selection of craft beers, ales, wines and spirits as well as a delicious menu prepared by our renowned chefs, The Marine is proud to be CAMRA Pub of the Year for South Shields and Sunderland 2020 and South Tyneside cider pub of the year 2017, 2018, 2019 & 2020.

Food has been top notch whenever we've eaten. The staff are all extremely friendly and laid back."
Posted on Our willy Family meal Family of four with all meals “see images” of excellent produce . Excellent service. Only issue was the £24 bottle of house wine.Posted on Jennie G Excellent Roast Lovely roast from the Marine today. We both chose Lamb and it was all cooked perfectly. The vegetables were all fresh and plentiful. Will come again.Posted on Dug N Not a good experience First the lady who was table service was brilliant. Long brown hair. Meal, fish and chips. In a road where there is 3 chip shops this was 2 out of ten. Massive fish and chips. Alas all batter and lots of bones. Not good. Fish obviously frozen. Massive heavy metal music coming out of the kitchen. Second chance at marine today but that's it. Shame.Posted on andy221145 food and drink Afternoon drinks and small eats. lovely food and very good choice of real ale and lagers. staff very friendly. it is a dog friendly pubPosted on Maureen R Great food at The Marine We called in on a Monday afternoon and ordered from the menu. We had steak and ale pie and minced beef and dumplings. The food was served promptly with a smile and the portions were enormous and tasted as good as they looked, and were great value for money. We can definitely recommend The Marine and will return when back in the area. The Beers although are quite expensive.Posted on ChiefyChuckles Great boozer In the day this was a traditional big pub with bog standard keg ales - what a change!!! Great selection of cask ales, friendy and chatty staff, and in a busy traditional setting. What a transformation.. rate this with the Alum Ale House, and the Steamboat as a MUST go to for real ale drinkers in Sandancer landPosted on 13disgruntled Wish Wash Gravy Fabulous public house. Decoration and staff are congenial to a great meal or drink out. Only one fault - please change the gravy - it needs to be put on life support it’s so painfully thin and anemic - such a shame.Posted on Bordersgeezer Cracking pub with superb ales and food Had read reviews and put this pub on my hit list on my visit to South Shields. From the outside the Marine is a bit underwhelming which is a real shame as it nearly preventing me from going in with my 3 friends. It badly requires some tlc with a splash of paint! However it didn’t deter us and the interior is quite the opposite. A very traditional bar but immaculate inside with lovely comfortable tables and chairs. Great choice of lagers and great real ales and features regularly in the GBG. Great food and home made snacks to boot. Wine reasonably priced. Would definitely recommendPosted on barbarahayden2016 Amazing burger Best burger we have eaten in a pub!!! Came with fresh salad, crispy onion rings and cracking chips. Friendly staff and a good pint!!!Posted on kennywint Great tasting burger. We decided that we would try the Marine for tea, been in lots of times just for a beer or two before. We both chose the burgers chicken and the classic, got to say the staff were great and freindly/helpfull .My beef burger was one of the tastiest that i have had and nicely presented with chips and a salad. My wife had the chicken burger she said was very nice. We both agreed that we will come again and try something different from the menu. Also a great selection of real ales well worth a visit.Tripadvisor rating score: 4.5 of 5, based on 136 reviews
